Some recent developments in ESB IN: (A) environmental line design (B) design/specification of ABC line components

The first part of this two part paper is concerned with environmental 38 kV line design in Ireland. It describes the considerations and options leading to the particular design chosen (single steel poles with polymeric composite insulators) and reviews the construction experience gained so far. The second part considers three developments in low voltage ABC (aerial bundled conductor) line components, waterproof insulation piercing connectors, pole fuse combination units and wear testing of suspension clamps. The background leading to these developments is described and particular attention is given to their specification/testing which has not, as yet, been agreed internationally
