  • Abstract
In response to the operational objectives of quality and economy of electricity supply and customer service, much importance is given by utilities on improved tools and methods for the real time control of their power systems. A distribution management system (DMS) is defined in terms of its functions and in relation with other systems that are used by modern utilities. Two scenarios for the integration of these functions with other utility systems are presented. Both seem feasible but will differ in the way they communicate process and engineering information. There are important implementation limitations, partially imposed by the historical design and evolution of AM/FM packages and DMS software from distinctly different environments and partly due to the status of computer technology and software. The challenge for utilities and vendors is to create a solid software platform that permits the gradual incorporation of DMS applications step by step as they develop. On this basis the utilities´ computer systems will integrate naturally
