Expert system for user connection analyses

The expert system (ES) described has been conceived to manage the technical aspects of the connection of user installations to the public supply networks, including the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. An expert system offers the most effective solution to the problem, due to its ability to combine analytic and heuristic rules and to the possibility of expanding and changing the rules to comply with new requirements, with a minimal effort. In using the ES, the connection cases are dealt with by applying uniform and well defined criteria, thus minimizing the effect of subjective interpretations. The ES has been conceived to run on a graphic workstation, hosting also the information system for distribution networks developed by ENEL, so that the operator can readily access the database describing the network and make use of the calculation programs forming part of the information system
