Abstract
A method of position control by using braking control of a BIM (brake induction motor) is proposed. The BIM consists of an induction motor and an EDB (electromagnetic disk brake) in the same body. The use of EDB removes the inverter which is usually employed in AC servo systems. This leads to a simple and low cost system. To attain precise control, two control methods are employed. One is a modified sliding mode control. The other is fuzzy control, which is used to reduce the distribution of the position error caused by fuzziness of a braking torque.<>
