Abstract
A novel image coding scheme is proposed and studied, in which fine spatial features are separated from an image and encoded using directional decomposition-based coding techniques. Morphological techniques are used for multiresolution feature decomposition and directional filtering in order to preserve the spatial integrity of the features. The experimental results from a preliminary study show that a high compression ratio can be achieved with good reconstruction image quality
