Abstract :
We have proposed a novel bending actuator for a catheter, of which the major components are a shape memory alloy spring, a stainless steel strip and two acrylic links. In order to analyse the characteristics of the proposed bending actuator, the buckling equation of the beam has been used and compared with experimental results on the fabricated actuator. Experimental results show excellent agreement with calculated values. Also, a micro model has been fabricated and characterized for possible application to micro active catheters. The repeatable actuation of the micro model is found to be adequate for practical application
