Abstract
A method for estimating the optimal degree of regularization in the presence of constraints on the restored image is presented. While regularization is a powerful method for obtaining satisfactory solutions to the image restoration problem, the optimal degree of regularization is seldom known ahead of time. Furthermore, the optimal degree of regularization changes when constraints are enforced in the restoration process. The generalized cross-validation criterion is modified to estimate the optimal degree of regularization in the presence of constraints on the solution. In addition, an efficient estimation procedure is used that makes it possible to evaluate the criterion with a computational complexity on the same order as the constrained restoration. The benefit of this procedure is demonstrated with examples
