Abstract
The energy analysis of near-cathode processes allows one to make qualitative conclusions about vacuum arc stability and the influence of basic parameters on the arc state. Decrease of voltage below φk * under fixed current density will lead to cathode overheating, reverse electron current and conversion of the diffusion cathode spot to a contra-reactionary one. The non-monotonous character of the current density distribution along the cylindrical hollow cathode length has been confirmed by analysis of the energy processes in the hollow cathode
