Abstract :
The aim of this experiment is to determine the statistical behavior of the parameters that influence the depolarizing characteristics of rain. The use of a three-polarization system enables the complete identification of the depolarizing properties of the rainy medium, which is characterized by three complex parameters: the canting angle, the anisotropy (or differential attenuation and differential phase shift), and the longitudinal homogeneity index. The statistics of these complex parameters are presented. The experimental details are briefly examined, including effects of noise and radome wetting. The statistics of two summer months are presented in order to illustrate the effect of an event with negative differential phase shift. It is shown that the rain medium is always longitudinally homogeneous for the path length considered (5.5 km).<>
