Abstract :
A description is given of a parallel signal processor system with 500 megaoperations/s capability that has been developed for real-time motion-picture coding. The architecture is based on the spatial parallelism of a picture. Multiple-element processors handle subregional pictures simultaneously without communicating with other element processors. Due to an overlap-save technique, element processors can carry out continuous processing over one frame picture. To increase motion-picture-encoding efficiency, two kinds of custom LSIs with two-dimensional processing functions have been developed for element processor implementation. The processor can be used to evaluate low-bit-rate TV-signal-encoding algorithms
