Abstract :
The first Canadian remote sensing satellite, Radarsat 1, was launched in November, 1995. The satellite carries a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at C-band. The antenna is a 15 m/spl times/ 1.5 m. horizontally polarized (HP) phase-scanned planar array. It provides for flexible image acquisitions, unconstrained by the orbit of the spacecraft. If a SAR has both an HP and a VP capability, more image information can be generated, allowing image processing enhancements. This paper describes work undertaken for the Canadian Space Agency leading to the development of a breadboard DSAR (dual polarized synthetic aperture radar) antenna. The DSAR design concept retains many key RSAT 1 features.
