Abstract
Shows that any color signal can be characterized as a linear combination of four principal component basis functions. Hence, the weighting coefficients of the color signal representation can identified by solving a system of equations based on the RGB responses of a color camera. It is indicated that S. Tominaga and B.A. Wandell´s (1989) illuminant estimation problem can be reformulated as solving a constrained least square error problem. Once both color signals and illuminant have been estimated, the surface reflectance can be computed automatically
