Abstract
A compensation system for the power-flow variation in utility networks caused by superconducting magnet energy storage (SMES) is studied. The daily pattern of the load variation in typical industrial systems is investigated to obtain basic requirements for the compensating system. A storage capacity of 0.3-2 MWh is found to be enough to regular short-term load variation. An integrated compensation system is proposed, and its control scheme is studied. The system consists of the SMES, a synchronous phase modifier, and an active power filter. Its conceptual design is carried out. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the approach.<>
