Abstract :
The details of the temperature fields within a piece of ceramic during firing and their variation with time has a significant influence on the yield of the firing process. Inappropriate firing can result in the creation of local defects or in atypical deformation of the piece as a whole. The thermal effects within a piece of ceramic are, in turn, related to the conditions existing in the kiln and to the position of the body of interest within the kiln. The authors describe a model of the thermal effects within a piece of ceramic during firing in a tunnel kiln. The thermal model is coupled to a model of deformation, to allow final geometry to be predicted
