Abstract
This paper is about the impact of multimedia on the professional communicator. A major development in the way multimedia will change over the next few years is the high-definition TV race to produce a new standard that will bring our computer displays and our domestic televisions into complete harmony for the first time. When this happens you can expect computer displays with what will look like cinema resolution in full colour, which are also complete televisions in their own right. Gone will be the problems of flicker and PAL colour shimmer; faster processors will produce real-time antialiasing to guarantee best quality images; and the film industry will find itself under severe pressure to change to the new technology because of the lower cost of video-based rather than film-based productions. This will bring associated benefits for what are presently difficult tasks-dedicated processors for complete computer-recorded video and audio
