  • Abstract
The authors describe a new hybrid electric drive system for cars and discuss its advantages over other systems in terms of performance, efficiency, emissions and control. Electric cars have long been regarded as potentially an ideal solution to the problems of air pollution and noise from road traffic. However, advances in battery technology have been unable to overcome deficiencies in performance, range, and recharging rate that have characterised the electric car since its inception. The Petro-Electric Drive Train (PEDT) is a unique hybrid electric drive concept that offers the performance and range of conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) drives, and the ability to operate emission-free as a pure electric vehicle
