Abstract
The author gives a brief review of the European Commission (EC) draft proposals for liberalising the electricity market within the European Community and the potential opportunities which would be created for UK utility companies. It then reviews other steps being taken to liberalise electricity markets and discusses some of their structural characteristics. The author goes on to examine opportunities that are arising more broadly in the European market for generation where the UK has already met with some success
