  • Abstract
Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) is now a widely accepted technique and is used in many manufacturing industries seeking to reduce development time, lower manufacturing costs, increase productivity, and improve product quality. The technique was developed by Professors Geoffrey Boothroyd and Peter Dewhurst from work initially carried-out at the University of Salford in the 1960s. The Boothroyd Dewhurst concept of DFMA allows a team to examine design alternatives and simplify the structure of the product before detail design has commenced. The authors discuss the principles involved in DFMA and its implementation by GPT Limited. They discuss the establishment of a methodology, the implementation of the tools, and personnel difficulties
