Abstract
The economic climate of the 1990s, characterised by fast moving business environments, necessitates a systematic approach to business strategy modelling as a prerequisite for organisations to sustain competitive advantage. Strategic planning is a continuous process of change which originates in factors internal or external to the organisation. The major problem in strategic change lies in the organisation´s ability to analyse the true impact of change on its plans, procedures and structures and to initiate feasible programs to enable implementation. Such problems and potential solutions are being investigated in the AIE Department of Lloyd´s Register. The picture emerges of a formal strategic model together with the concept of knowledge asset as the means for strategic modelling of an organisation rather than as a support to strategic decision making. The knowledge asset approach change brings forward the essence of strategic planning, i.e. analysing situations, considering the outcomes of proposals and thinking about the sequence of actions required to put change into effect as well as provide an integration role in the organisation in the sense of acting as a communication channel between the organisation´s stakeholders. The knowledge asset approach promotes a thorough understanding of the knowledge consolidated in the organisational planning statements by offering a dynamic model of such knowledge, instead of a merely static one
