The AUDETEL system is intended to supplement the sound track of TV programmes to offer blind and partially sighted people additional audiodescription of visually conveyed information and events that is necessary for them to correctly interpret, or more richly appreciate what is being presented. The authors describe the results of a survey in which they investigated the use made of television by 540 blind and partially sighted people, the kinds of programmes which they felt might most and least benefit from audiodescription and the difficulties and advantages that they envisaged the system might entail
