Abstract
The author describes how the decision to use simulators for training drivers for Networker One EMUs was based on four clearly identified needs of the training department:- (1) conversion training of competent drivers; (2) basic training of new entrants; (3) training drivers to handle emergency situations; and (4) numerical assessment of drivers´ performance. These needs were reinforced by a number of other requirements, including the new technology of Networkers compared to existing rolling stock; the number of drivers to be trained; the short delivery programme and timescale for introduction of Networkers; and the restrictions placed on training on a busy inner suburban railway
