Abstract :
The multi-wavelength transport network project is looking at the provision of an optical extension layer for the existing network. This optical transport layer would provide a broadband network, transparent to varying data formats and capable of operating at high bit rates. Network nodes in the uppermost layer could provide optical cross-connect and a local add/drop function in the wavelength domain, while switching of data takes place electronically at the lower levels
