Abstract :
The paper introduces a new edge and corner preserving smoothing algorithm that combines the advantages of some of the established image smoothing techniques. It discusses the characteristics of the median filter and related work on maximum homogeneity filters. It then describes the new technique that avoids some of the problems associated with the median filter. Finally the results of applying the new filter to synthetic images are discussed
