Abstract
The concept of a mass market, pocketable, high quality, multi-environment mobile telecommunications system is currently being realised within Europe and the world by development of UMTS: the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. UMTS is aimed to provide for the communications needs of the telecommunications user from early in the next century (commencing around the year 2003). Services will be accessible from the domestic, business and public environments with multi-operator service provision using a pocket sized terminal which will offer high quality speech with the capability of data up to 2 m/Bits where required. The aim is to provide the network support for UMTS as an IN (intelligent network) application. This should be largely backbone network independent to enable IN to be operated upon the ISDN (64 kbit) or BISDN (ATM) based networks. As an IN application both UMTS and other IN services can be developed and provided as required following the original concepts of IN
