  • Abstract
RACE Project MONET (Mobile Networks) is studying the networking aspects of a third generation mobile system called the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). Part of this project has been set up in order to simulate the operation of the mobile functions that will be needed in order to support the services and procedures necessary for mobile users. As such, this simulation work will be used to evaluate the network behaviour and therefore act as a means of validating the results of the other MONET groups, whose work includes: definition of the mobility functions for the UMTS; definition of the UMTS services; security and management issues; traffic modelling; and network architectures for the UMTS. The paper describes the work of the simulation sub-group focussed towards the fixed network infrastructure
