Abstract :
In order to control signalling costs, researchers have studied several new approaches to mobility management in personal communications. Some of them focus on the architecture of the signaling system that processes location information. Others, examined at Rutgers University WINLAB, aim to reduce the work done by the signaling system and switches by adding intelligence to fixed network elements and to wireless terminals. This added intelligence allows the network to establish location management procedures matched to the mobility and calling patterns of individual subscribers. The authors define location management in general terms and review the location management procedure of GSM (Pan-European digital cellular) and North American cellular systems
