Abstract
An analysis is made of voltage spike clamping circuits containing a diode clipper for current-type pulse width-modulated (PWM) power converters, such as PWM rectifiers and PWM current-source inverters. The equivalent circuits and differential equations for the charging current of the voltage spike absorbing capacitor are derived. Expressions for the required capacitance and the required current rating of the discharge circuit are derived from them in simple forms suitable for use in design and are applied to experimental power converters with voltage spike clamping circuits. The analytical results are verified by experiments carried out on an experimental current-type converter/inverter system for a variable-speed AC drive.<>
