Abstract :
Single chip devices with complete memory, CPU and I/O capability are profilerating. A billion-dollar market is being projected for the early ´80s. CPU capability of these chips has rapidly evolved through the 4 and 8-bit level, and 16-bit machines are now available. Notwithstanding the widespread activity in the semiconductor industry, there is still an urgent need for standardization and better software support. Tradeoffs among many critical factors, including memory size, interface and DMA, will be explored.
