Abstract
Automated mapping had been debated in the Scottish Hydro Electric Company for several years. However it was late 1990 before any firm commitment to evaluate potential software systems was obtained and by this time the wider concept of a geographical information system had emerged. The pilot project has spanned turbulent times as the electricity supply industry has made the transition from public utility to individual private companies. Nevertheless the project has weathered the storm despite some navigational failures, spells blockaded in port, and crew changes. The authors attempt to highlight some of the learning points which emerged from the pilot project
