Abstract :
The authors present some preliminary results pertaining to a dye, N-all-trans retinylidene p-aminophenol (ATRPAP), which mimics certain of the optical properties of bacteriorhodopsin. The reason for investigating this substance is to establish a more expedient procedure for tailoring some of the optical properties of this holographic recording material. It usually takes more than a week to biosynthesise enough bacteriorhodopsin for film preparation, compared with 24 hours for the model compound
