Abstract :
Since 1951 until up to a few years ago, the growth of electrical demand on the Ischia Island (Italy) was met by means of MV submarine cable links. The present HV submarine cable connection represents an important improvement considering both total system reliability and power availability. This project was characterized by peculiar environmental conditions. On land, the discovery of Roman artefacts led the planers to look for a proper route and to adopt particular buildings for the plant concerned. In the sea, heavy traffic and fishing activities required protection of the cable at up to 100 m water depth, exceeding what is generally used. The authors describe how all the problems were solved thanks to a considerable coordination effort by all the project parties involved and to the proper solutions developed specifically for this project
