Abstract :
Since 1969, the date of the first installation of 225 kV cables with low density polyethylene insulation (LDPE) SILEC have installed more than 1100 km of cable and about 4700 joints and terminations in 225 kV network in France as well as abroad. The in service results have allowed the development of LDPE insulated cables for the 400 kV and 500 kV networks. A feasibility study based on technical and economical considerations has led to the design of the 400 kV cable with a wall thickness insulation ranging from 27 to 30 mm, according to the conductor cross-section, and to the development of accessories, terminations and joints, made of high reliability prefabricated components. In the meantime, a 500 kV cable has been successfully tested in EDF laboratories and the first 500 kV LDPE link has been installed, energized and is now operating
