  • Abstract
Virtual reality represents a new revolution in computing. The generation by computer of a completely alternative reality into which the user is immersed, and with which the user can interact, represents a fundamental transition to a truly 3D interface. At this point the user no longer interfaces to a computer, he becomes part of it. However this revolution brings with it a requirement for almost unlimited computation. More natural parallel models must be established for describing the problems to be explored and the environment which is created for the explorer. The author´s company started to investigate this problem by building on a background in advanced parallel systems design. They started a programme of research called Vision, in the hope of establishing some basic parallel framework for future virtual reality machines. The first phase of this work has led to the development of a dedicated parallel machine called PROvision, and with itdVS, parallel software architecture which facilitates the development of advanced virtual environments
