Abstract
Several control laws have been shown to eliminate the rotating stall hysteresis of a one mode Galerkin approximation of the Moore-Greitzer compressor model. In this paper we discuss the suitability of some of these control laws for higher order approximations. Two distinct analysis techniques are used to show that the range of gains that makes the rotating stall branch locally stable may be smaller for higher order models. Furthermore, numerical bifurcation analysis is used to show that even control laws that locally stabilize the rotating stall branch of the higher order models show poor behavior globally. Such results motivate alternative approaches to synthesizing control laws that account for the coupled, high order dynamics
