Economics of local loop competition by radio access

Describes the economics of radio access in the local loop, compares the attractiveness of competing technologies and concludes that there are no general solutions. Each potential service area must be analysed separately in order to determine the optimum mix of technologies. In general radio based technologies appear best suited to low population density areas with GSM solutions appropriate for widespread rural areas and DCS1800 suited to village and small town environments, DECT based systems become more attractive with increasing traffic density. However, fully cabled solutions can be cheaper than radio-based ones in areas of high population density, particularly where mobility is not required
