  • Abstract
    Using nonlinear wavelet transform could efficiently represent edges and compact energy into lower subbands of the transform, so the method of introducing nonlinear wavelet transforms into image compression is proposed. The coding method of this approach is based on the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm. How to progressively transmit the transformed coefficients is also discussed. That is, through controlling either the scale or the bit-rate, progressive image transmission is efficiently executed. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than JPEG2000, especially at higher compression ratios
