  • Abstract
The impact of fiber optics on the grounding of distributed electronic systems in chemical plants is discussed. Fiber optics, when used as the physical medium in communications, enables the use of single-point ground concepts for sensitive electronic equipment. The result is improved safety and performance. To implement this scheme, the electrical engineer must have a clear understanding of distributed electrical power and electronic systems, and must integrate his grounding knowledge base with communication and networking techniques. It is shown how fiber optics is being used to enable proper single-point grounding of distributed electronic systems in industrial facilities with varying existing grounding approaches. It is argued that in all situations grounding must be recognized first and foremost as a safety method and must adhere to the US National Electrical Code (NEC)
