Abstract :
In order to address problems involving the installation of long, seafloor-tethered vertical arrays under Arctic ice, the authors developed a means to deploy lightweight vertical acoustic arrays from the seafloor upward. Their apparatus is lowered to the seafloor through a hole in the ice, with the array in a packaged configuration. After a predetermined time interval, the array is released from the seafloor and extends to its full length under upward buoyant forces from flotation at the top of the array. The apparatus could be converted for use in other applications. Expendable arrays that monitor a variety of water-column variables are one immediate possibility
