Abstract
Quantifies penetration capabilities of radar systems in arid areas, for sub-surface imaging purposes. Data acquisition systems considered range from ground penetrating radars to airborne and orbital synthetic aperture radars. First fieldwork results are presented for two study sites: one is located in France (Pilat dune near Bordeaux) and the other one is located in East Africa (Republic of Djibouti). Data obtained are used to constrain theoretical radar backscattering models, including both surface and volume scattering terms
