    Brief analyses of reasons for the gap between eastern European countries and world engineering management are given. Deficiencies in engineering management during transition conditions are presented, especially the ones resulting from the people´s mentality shaped by socialism and from some specific regulations. An attempt has been undertaken to generalize the experiences of the author. Prospects for system changes are examined
