Abstract
It is demonstrated that metallic microstructures show much more complex effects than do dielectric structures. Characteristically the effects are due to enhancement of the incident radiation by resonant surface states within the system, the enhancement being particularly intense when two surfaces are in close proximity as at a crack or crevice. Controlling the structure, and thus the enhancement, brings the possibility of bringing to bear huge radiation fields in very small volumes
