Abstract :
In this paper, we are proposing an enhanced lossless image compression called partial SPIRT that is based on SPIRT. The new method uses thresholds that are based on the frequency of ones in each bit plane. The algorithm uses the conventional SPHIT in each bit plane as long as the frequency of ones is less than 0.2; otherwise, SPHIT will not be used for that particular bit plane and two new options are used instead. Option_l is used if the frequency of ones is less than 0.3 and option_2 is used if it is greater than 0.3. The proposed algorithm provides higher lossless compression than SPHIT, because the SPHIT losses its efficiency as it transmits the lower bit planes. Also, a bit plane based arithmetic coder is used in which the frequency table and the cumulative frequency table are reset to their initial values at each bit plane.
