Abstract :
The effects of PEMW (pulsed electromagnetic waves) exposure on the function of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis of the rats are explored. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) was performed to observe the changes of contents of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), COR (cortisone) and ALD (aldosterone) in the sera of the rats. The ACTH level in serum decreased at first and reached the lowest point at 12h after exposure(P<0.05), and then recovered. COR decreased gradually following irradiation and reached the lowest point at 24h after exposure (P<0.01), and then recovered. ALD decreased gradually following irradiation and reached the lowest point at 24h(P<0.01), and then recovered at 48h but increased significantly on 7d after exposure(P<0.01). PEMW disturbance of ACTH, COR and ALD in the sera of rats and the effect appeared at early stage, and lasted a certain duration. It is inferred that PEMW could have certain effects on the function of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis of the rats
