Abstract :
Two adaptive non-linear filters that employ both temporal and amplitude processing have been presented. The application of these filters as a digital channel equaliser has been demonstrated. It has been shown that this class of filters can provide superior performance over their linear counterpart. In general the microstatistic filter requires more weight updates compared with N out of N2 for the amplitude banded filter. The selection of threshold level is rather ad-hoc. They are fixed and are equally spaced throughout the filter operation. Future work is focused on examining dynamic thresholding schemes that can adjust to varying signal range, continuously update the number of threshold levels and vary the distance between quantisation levels throughout the filter operation
