Abstract
An adaptive nonlinear filter is described. It is demonstrated to generalise over both standard linear and nonlinear filters and to reject noise from smoothly changing and discontinuous signals. It is placed in the context of a nonlinear multiscale decomposition, sieve, that can be used to characterise nonlinear filters
