Abstract :
Solar voltaic power systems are critically looked at from a user´s point of view. A circuit configuration regarded suitable for use in powering radio link equipment is described. Early failure mechanisms of solar modules are listed and major requirements for solar cell encapsulation are given. A statement is ventured as to equipment reliability of a solar system. Careful selection, sizing and maintenance of solar system component parts are of utmost importance to secure continuous power availability throughout the year. Solar power systems are found to be a cost competitive alternative to the conventional dual-diesel approach for continuous loads up to around 200 W in areas within the latitude bands 15° to 3° N and 15° to 30° S.
