Abstract :
This paper aims to provide the background theory and design methodology required for the effective design of brushless doubly fed reluctance machines. Reviewing existing theory, a new mean synchronous speed reference frame is presented to aid the understanding of the design requirements for an effective machine. Design equations are presented and an example design is developed. The example design indicates that the machine is capable of high torque density at low speeds.
