Abstract :
General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs) were introduced in September 1992. GNVQs lie at the very heart of the evolving National Framework of Qualifications. Advanced GNVQs-or `vocational A Levels´-are the natural successor to the earlier ONC/Ds and the more recent BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas. They are the key to success for the National Framework of Qualifications and to making rapid progress towards meeting National Targets for Education and Training. This paper discusses the Advanced GNVQ in Engineering-a qualification designed to provide opportunities for candidates to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin the creation of engineered products, engineering systems and services. The Advanced GNVQ in Engineering will also provide opportunities to address wider issues concerned with the value of engineering to society and the environment
