Abstract :
In the United Kingdom, the Engineering Council registers professionally qualified engineering personnel at three levels: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech). The IEEIE-the largest Incorporated body, with nearly 30000 members-nominates individuals to the IEng and EngTech registers and is authorised to accredit at both levels. Historically the academic routes to IEng status have been via relevant Higher National Certificates or Diplomas. Since July 1990 the minimum academic qualification for Corporate Membership of the IEEIE has been exemplified by an accredited HND. However, the number of IEEIE members with degrees is increasing, partly reflecting the need for Chartered Electrical Engineers to be in possession of an accredited Honours degree, and also as a result of the current computer-based technological revolution in industry
