Abstract :
A framework is given that explains structural changes wholesale banks have historically made to systems in the past, in order to adapt to environmental pressures. Further, the authors use the framework to predict that recent wholesale banking environmental changes have again necessitated structural adaptation that has rendered current structures inappropriate. Structural adaptation is viewed in terms of the demands imposed by the banks´ external environment to differentiate information systems resources from one another, as well as integrate them with each other. The authors present a differentiation/integration approach for examining environmental demands and potentially designing appropriate information systems structures for wholesale banks
